Microsoft’s deal with Nokia wasn’t only about smartphones and platforms, Nokia had to “contribute” its Navteq assets to the deal for Microsoft to use. This, amazingly, results in free publicity for Nokia. Stephen Elop recently revealed that Bing Maps will show the Nokia brand all over the place; everywhere from Maps on Windows Phone, even if they aren’t Nokia, to the online Bing Maps. Even some Verizon Android handsets that use Bing Maps will show Nokia branding, as well as Blackberry devices that use Bing Maps. Nokia has certainly benefited from this controversial deal with Microsoft.
